NALS...the association for legal professionals, began in 1929 as the National Association of Legal Secretaries. A young legal secretary, Eula May Jett, in Long Beach, California, was encouraged by a court clerk to talk with other legal secretaries about correct preparation of legal documents. As a result of that challenge, NALS was formed. Today, NALS is a tri-level organization with membership available in local chapters and state associations nationwide.
On October 14, 1974, President Gerald R. Ford signed a proclamation designating the second full week of October as National Legal Secretaries Court Observance Week. Forty-one years after that proclamation, NALS continues to uphold the legacy by establishing an annual theme which our state and local chapters promote during the month of October. “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness” is the theme of Court Observance Week 2015. All NALS members are invited and encouraged to participate in these annual events in celebration of the constitutional freedoms our courts protect. NALS of Michigan is excited to announce its full day of legal education at Kalamazoo Valley Community College focusing on issues related to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
At this full day seminar speakers will focus on Human Trafficking, Constitutional Law, Immigration Issues, and Lessons Learned From Ferguson, Missouri.
